“So You Think You Can Dance” Finale - Full Recap

So, do you know who won? Yes–we’re talking about the season finale of So You Think You Can Dance.

If you missed it, we can tell you how it ended.

But first, we’ll tell you about how it began.

A Great, Big Reunion

The opening music put all of the season-four top-20 dancers back onstage together, with Cat squealing, “Oh, my babies!”

And, not only did the dancers reunite in this show, but last night also put six judges on stage: Nigel, Mary, Mia Michaels, Adam Shankman, Debbie Allen, and Lil C.

During the show’s opening, Adam updated the dancers and audience about the special award that he’d promised to the winning dancer: a featured dance role in the next movie he’s producing. The movie, he announced, will be Step Up: 3-D, and the winning dancer will perform in the first ever 3-D dance movie.

Hip-Hop to Start

The show got rolling when all 20 dancers took the stage for a hip-hop routine, choreographed by Shane Sparks. Throughout this routine, one dancer kept catching my eye: that was Gev. It was really good to see him back on the show.

The Best of the Best

Tonight, we found out what routines the judges liked best from our top-ten dancers, and each of the judges’

picks was performed again.

Nigel made the first selection. He chose Katee and Joshua’s Bollywood routine, choreographed by Nakul Dev Mahajan and originally performed in episode 419.

Mary picked second, choosing the rumba, as performed on episode 415 by Courtney and Gev, who Mary called “a match made in heaven.”

Popping Rivals

One of tonight’s surprises included a battle between poppers Robert and Philip, who had both prematurely left So You Think You Can Dance. Working to Kanye West’s “Stronger,” the two dancers executed feats of movement that sometimes seemed inhuman. At the end of the battle, the judges declared a winner: Robert, 5 to 1, was crowned winner.

More Moments to Remember

Following the battle, Adam and Lil C each picked a favorite performance. Adam called Comfort and Twitch back to the stage to perform Dave Scott’s hip-hop routine, set to “Forever” by Chris Brown.

As his favorite, Lil C chose Mark and Chelsie’s performance of Tabitha & Napoleon D’Umo’s hip-hop to “Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis. “Instead of dancing from your heart, you have to dance through your heart,” Lil C said, explaining his choice. “Your mind is the birthplace of ingenuity, and your heart is the mediator.” For him, this piece and the dancers’ performance, showed what it meant to dance through your heart.

Imagine

When it came time for Mia’s first pick, she felt she had no option but to choose the pas de deux that Desmond Richardson & Dwight Rhoden had created for Katee and Will for episode 421. During their original

performance of this routine, the pair made one mistake that Nigel said was probably the only thing that kept it from being the best performance of their careers. Tonight, they performed the routine flawlessly.

Adam, in selecting his second-favorite routine, said, “I don’t know how anyone could go after that,” referring to Katee and Will’s performance. But, still he made his pick, calling back Courtney and Mark for the jazz routine by Sonya Tayeh, from episode 425. Remembering how Adam could barely stay in his seat after the pair originally performed that routine, I was quite sure that he’d name it as one of his favorites.

Two Goodbyes

Not waiting until the very end to reveal all voting results, at this point in the show Cat named one dancer who did not win. The first of the top-four to be eliminated was Courtney.

Several numbers came and went: a group routine for the top-five guys, and a performance by Cirque Du Soleil. Then, it was time to send another dancer home.

Cat called to the stage Katee, Joshua, and Twitch. Katee, who stood as the final female, was named as one who did not make it to the top two. But the dismissal wasn’t all bad. Cat presented Katee with a bouquet and a surprise: as the top female dancer, she would take home fifty thousand dollars.

Debbie Allen Dance Academy

One of the highlights of the finale, for me, was seeing the tap dancers from The Debbie Allen Dance Academy perform with Nigel. Not only was it good to see such young dancers with such skill and passion, but the routine itself was just so fun and happy. Following, the judges commented on Nigel’s performance with the students. And Adam challenged, “If I’m back next year, I want to take him on!”

Final Favorites

The final three routines chosen by the judges for repeat included: Mary’s pick for Katee and Twitch’s performance in Mia Michaels’ routine to “Mercy,” from episode 423; Debbie Allen’s choice for Kherrington and Twitch to dance Jean-Marc Genereux’s Viennese Waltz from episode 413; and Nigel’s selection of Katee and Joshua’s slow hip-hop “No Air,” by Tabitha and Napoleon D’Umo from way back in episode 411.

And then it was time for the final elimination.

Results

As Twitch and Joshua stood onstage awaiting the results, they couldn’t keep from hugging each other. Cat, after announcing that American viewers had cast 60 million votes, revealed that the winner of So You Think You Can Dance season 4, a quarter of a million dollars, and a role in the upcoming Step Up 3-D is Joshua.

Joshua, clearly overwhelmed, stood quietly with Cat, waiting for the audience to calm down before he spoke.

“Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t do something,” he began. This untrained dancer, who had just become America’s favorite, reminded audiences, “no matter what you do, you can always go forward.” He closed the show with a thankful and humble attitude, saying, “God is in control, and with God you can do anything.”
